University of Latvia (LU) — is the largest state-run institution of higher education. It is situated in the historical center of Riga. LU has been founded in 1919 as “The Latvian Higher School” and since then its academic, research and professional activities has never been suspended. An international rating of the University is very high. According to QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) world university rankings, LU is placed among 5% of the world best universities.

Study at LU

The University of Latvia has 13 faculties. It is home for more than 15,000 students including over 1,500 foreign students. The University offers more than 130 state accredited academic and professional bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate programmes.

LU is a full member of numerous international networks like the European University Association (EUA) and Utrecht Network to promote the internationalization of tertiary education. It is an active participant of ERASMUS exchange programme. Currently, the University of Latvia has signed more than 350 agreements with 235 institutions in 30 European countries. A wide international collaboration and cooperation of university make its highly skilled graduates more competitive in both local and international job markets. Alumni and graduates of LU are in a high demand in Europe and world-wide as well.

Student accommodation in Riga

The University of Latvia offers two nearby located hostels for students – “Prima” and “Reznas”. It will take no more than 20 minutes from the hostels to reach the city center, main building of LU and Old Town Riga.

The hostel “Prima” is situated in 9-storey building. Each two rooms are combined with a common hall and shared bathroom with shower fixture. The common area kitchen is equipped with refrigerator, microwave, cooktop stove and cooking utensils.

How much does it cost to stay in a hostel “Prima”?

Cost of a twin room in a hostel is approximately 100 EUR/month per person. The price of hostel accommodation is usually depending both on the number of people that will be living in the room and in each floor. In other words, the rental prices vary with shared facilities: i.e. the toilet and shower are shared between the whole 6th floor, i.e. maximum three tenants (the same is applied to 7th and 8th floor); the toilet and shower are shared between the whole 2nd floor, i.e. 5 tenants (the same is applied to 3rd, 4th and 5th floors).

The hostel “Reznas” provides comfortable accommodation possibilities only for international students who came to LU under the auspice of Erasmus exchange programme.

The hostel “Reznas” is located in 5-storey building. Two shared toilets, showers and common area kitchen are situated on each floor.

What is the cost of a hostel stay?

The cost of rent in a hostel “Reznas” depends on the number of people staying in the room:

  • triple room – 100 EUR/ month per person;
  • twin room (with set of bunk beds) – 130 EUR/ month per person;
  • Twin-room (with 2 single beds) – 150 EUR/ month per person;
  • Single room – 270 EUR/ month per person.

General information

To book the room in one of these hostels a student must make an upfront payment of the first two months' rent in advance. Minimum stay in a hostel is 2 months.

What additional services are provided?

The hostels offer:

  • free Wi-Fi;
  • free parking for cars and bicycles;
  • on-campus café at a fairly reasonable price;
  • laundry facilities (for an extra charge).

Are there eateries and shopping malls close to the hostels?

The entertainment center and Latvian cuisine restaurant “Lido”, shopping centers “Mols” and “Azur” are 15 minutes on foot from the hostels. Also, many shops and great bakery are quite close to the hostels.

How do you reach the hostels?

You have to get onto the trolleybus No. 15. The stop is located near the main building of the University of Latvia. You have to get out on the stop called “Reznas iela” (it's the 8th stop on route from the LU).
